Interview with Alessandra Astolfi, Group Brand Manager Green & Technology Division, Italian Exhibition Group (IEG).

How might the event “Key Energy” be of benefit to the Egyptian Renewable Energy Industry?

Key Energy is a business and training opportunity for the entire renewable energy sector: a marketplace at which to find ideas, set up contacts, increase commercial prospects and opportunities.

Egypt is among the focus countries for the 2019 edition, because, as you know, your country has in fact expressly targeted photovoltaic energy to increase its share of renewable energy and thus reach 40% of clean energy in its energy mixture by 2035. In the south of your country a 1.6 gigawatt solar energy plant, the largest in the world, is being realized and is attracting great interest. The plant should contribute substantially to raising the crossbar of the renewable energy quota that currently covers approximately 3% of the country’s needs. It is therefore clear that Egypt is becoming a case history for whoever works in this sector.

Through the years, Italy has been able to conquer the leadership in the sector of renewable energy, our country’s enterprises are in the avant-garde in Europe for environmental innovationefficient consumption and reduction of CO2 emissionKey Energy is the key international event in the European Mediterranean area for the sustainable energy chain: from renewable sources to storage, from efficient energy management to the use of digital technology and the mobility of the future.

I believe taking part in Key Energy could be extremely advantageous for the Egyptian renewable energy industry: visitors will be able to see a complete showcase of technology and services for the economy’s decarbonization and more. In fact, Key Energy is also an event for networking among the sector’s key players and an opportunity for updating and training for all energy professionals.

The Scientific Committee is made up of institutions, industrial associations, technical-scientific associations, organizations and foundations. The 2019 conference schedule will ensure in-depth coverage of technological innovations and the financial models and organizational solutions able to facilitate progress towards the ambitious objectives for increasing renewable energy quotas.

What potential does Egypt have with regards to Renewable Energy?

According to what we have just said, Egypt can contribute considerably to the spread of renewable energy in the entire North African basin. The Mediterranean is definitely one of the most attractive areas in the world for the development of solar and wind energy.

North Africa’s solar irradiation is among the world’s highest, and North Africa also has excellent wind power potential, having windy zones such as Morocco’s Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Suez. In the course of recent years, North African countries have begun to exploit this enormous potential.

In spite of this, however, sun and wind continue to make a marginal contribution to the energy systems of the area’s countries. In conclusion, I believe that in this field a profitable relationship can be established between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

The companies that have already confirmed their participation in Key Energy 2019, ABB, ENI, E2i, ERG, Fronius, Hitachi, Huawei and Panasonic Business, just to mention a few, form a showcase of innovative technologies which, with their know-how, combined with the progress and development of Green Technologies, can be a source of inspiration for long-term improvement of North African energy systems, as well as being interested in investing in that specific area.
